Thanks to the invasion of Poland, France declared war against Germany on September 3, 1939. They soon invaded the Saarland region but had to withdraw. This was followed by the 'phoney war' until 1940, when the Germans invaded the north of France. Small parts of France would remain in German hands until the end of the war on May 8, 1945.
